There’s a growing chorus on LinkedIn blaming AI for the flood of bad content online: boring posts, lifeless articles, recycled phrases. The subtext? That AI is wrecking writing, stealing jobs, and cheapening ideas. But here’s the truth: no one seems to want to say out loud that most “bad AI content” isn’t a tech problem. It’s a human one.
Ask any LLM to write something like “an article about why humans should control AI,” and unless you provide it with more context, structure, audience, and intent, you’re going to get a generic wall of fluff. That’s not a model flaw. That’s a user error. You wouldn’t assign a new hire to write your keynote with zero direction and then fire them when they miss the mark. But people do that to AI all day long.
The real issue is that most users don’t want to do the work. They don’t want to train their model instance, define a tone, clarify a position, or even think through what they’re trying to say. Then, they blame the tool.
If you take the time to teach it, AI can match your writing voice, construct solid arguments, and even surprise you with insights. But it can’t read your mind. And it definitely can’t replace the thinking you’re avoiding.
Tools don’t make you sloppy. Cutting corners does.
